What is a WhatsApp click-to-chat link?

A click-to-chat link is a URL on the wa.me domain (or the longer api.whatsapp.com/send endpoint) that, when opened, launches WhatsApp directly into a conversation with a specific phone number. You can attach a pre-filled message so the user only has to tap Send to start the conversation.

Phone number formatting rules

WhatsApp click-to-chat links require the number in full international format with no plus sign, no leading zero, no spaces, dashes, or brackets. The country code goes first, followed by the local number.

What\'s the difference between wa.me and api.whatsapp.com?
Both work identically. wa.me is shorter and looks better in printed materials and ads, while api.whatsapp.com/send is the original endpoint and reads more clearly to users in some contexts. We recommend wa.me for marketing.
Do I need a WhatsApp Business account?
No. Click-to-chat links work for any phone number registered with WhatsApp — personal or business. WhatsApp Business adds extras like a profile, away messages, and quick replies for the receiving side, but doesn\'t change how the link works.
Can the pre-filled message contain emojis and line breaks?
Yes. The message text is URL-encoded so emojis, accented characters, and line breaks all work. Our generator handles encoding automatically — you just type the message naturally.
Why does the link sometimes show "Phone number shared via URL is invalid"?
This happens when the number includes a + sign, a leading zero, or spacing characters. Use the full international format with no plus and no separators (e.g., 447700900123, not +44 7700 900123). Our tool sanitises the input automatically.
